INTRODUCTION
What are the bad effects of cartoon shows to children?
Definition of Human Behavior
A detailed definition of human behavior is presented in the Encyclopaedia Britannica website which states that human behavior is the potential and expressed capacity for physical, mental, and social activity during the phases of human life. The website stated further that "Human beings, like other animal species, have a typical life course that consists of successive phases of growth, each of which is characterized by a distinct set of physical, physiological, and behavioral features."
(Source: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/275332/human-behaviour)
Human Behavior can be generalized as the way people act on the things that are happening around them. It may render from good or bad, depending on the person's perception of what is good to intake or not.
The behavior of children is the result of how they absorb anything that they see, hear, and think. It could be the aftermath of parents' permission to let their kids fall into the hands of media. Being too trustful to what their kids watch somewhat results from an uncertain behavior that could stain their morality.
Definition of Cartoon Humor
When considered as an act or term while watching a cartoon. Cartoon Humor is a combined word of cartoon and Humor. Cartoon as the subject and Humor as the verb. Based on the Merriam - Webster dictionary and its concise encyclopedia , cartoon is defined as (a) "a drawing in a newspaper or magazine intended as a humorous comment on something". Cartoons are not just collaborating with any forms of medias in animation, but also in human behaviour that they use in their jokes while the show.
(Source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cartoon )
People might think that a humor is just a piece of scatter in the wind, but, nowadays Cartoons use its humor to interact with the happenings in the country. It may be from politics, medias, science, and other forms of new things in the society. Cartoon humor sometimes educational, but mostly, violent and sadistic.
The Effects of Watching Cartoons
Cartoons are the most frequent and easily accessible source of entertainment provided among the children. With the vastness of media and extension of channels, it has become easier for the children to watch their favorite cartoon shows on a single click and at the same time it has become more convenient for the parents to provide their children with the all-time favorite activity. The leisure time which was before spent by the children in outdoor activities is now replaced with watching their favorite shows on television for long hours, peering at all sorts of cartoons, mostly without the supervision of elders who are completely unaware that this might have certain effects on their psychological development later displayed on their behavioral patterns.
A. Violence
Cartoons as centuries pass by, became more cruel and gruesome in which surprisingly the audiences found it appealing, especially the kids. Humans have this natural sense of humor, in different ways , but all in the same aspect - a need to laugh.
Mark Hadley wrote an article, "Is Cartoon Violence Bad for Kids?". He stated that "This slapstick style cartoon is built around a simple formula, that owes much to comic ancestors like Tom and Jerry, though the level of violence has escalated over the years. Where Jerry might have dropped an anvil on Tom, the cockroaches now resort to attacking Oggy with buses and submarines. The issues associated with cartoon violence however, remain as fresh as the first time they turned up on TV."
(Source: http://growingfaith.com.au/entertainment/is-cartoon-violence-bad-for-children )
There are Pros and Cons in Violence and so much more in Cartoon violence which is way more accessible to kids. The kid may interpret violence in a wrong way, thinking that it is good to hurt someone for personal pleasure. One of the Pros is that cartoon violence enhances kids to be more aware in their surroundings. Violence also helps them to modulate their survival instincts and creativity towards danger.
B. Sadism
Watching cartoons became a habit for some kids and teenagers, and the parents are not aware of the lessons their kids are learning from the show. It may be 80's, 90's, or the current - Cartoons are still considered as behavioral activists because the characters it portrayed remain as a counterpart significant role of a human person.
Maia Szalavitz wrote an article, Understanding Psychopathic and Sadistic Minds . She stated that "When viewing the pictures of pain, the sadists showed greater activation in their amygdala — a brain area associated with strong emotion — compared with the other sexual offenders. Moreover, the sadists rated the pain experienced by the victim as more intense than the nonsadists did. And the more intense the sadists thought the pain was, the greater their activation in another brain region called the insula, which is involved with monitoring one’s own feelings and body states."
(Source: http://healthland.time.com/2012/05/14/understanding-the-psychopathic-mind/ )
People always love to see fights. Society pays to see a live boxing match. The humans created acting as a source of entertainment. Our behavioral pattern towards violence is natural. It is a fact that some children became sadists because of misused knowledge about cartoons. Sadism, based on Szalavitz is a person that enjoys the pain of others. There is a connection formed between a behavior of a person and the cartoon humor. The cartoon provides guidelines, while the human generates its facts and formulates an ideal mindset about a certain belief.
C. Schizophrenia
Being arrogant about something will not help you to be into something. Just like Phineas and Ferb's older sister - Candace Flynn. With the demand for young creative minds to go for a course majoring in Art, we can't deny the fact that animators are one of the most popular and most lucrative jobs nowadays. Phineas and Ferb is the most famous cartoon shows kids love at present. Due to the trifling act of science, cartoon humor, which each character possesses, children who are watching this show will be hooked up watching the series all day and night. But, nevertheless the parents know that the cartoon series Phineas and Ferb is not just about creative science, and humor. It also tackles a serious mental illness called " Schizophrenia".
Sherry Rauh wrote an article, "When Schizophrenia Appears" which stated that "People with schizophrenia can have a hard time telling what’s real and what’s not. They may see things that aren’t there or hold firm beliefs that fly in the face of fact."
(Source: http://www.webmd.com/schizophrenia/features/when-schizophrenia-appears )
Most of the time, we see cartoons as a kids' show that is exaggerated for the entertainment of the children. But, parents don't know that cartoons have behavioral problems that the children might inherit while watching the series. In the Cartoon series Phineas and Ferb, their older sister, Candace, suffers from a long term mental disorder "Schizophrenia". That explains why she can't fight the urge to divulge the activities of their brothers in front of their parents. Animators nowadays are witty in terms of their secret recipe for a great cartoon show, but, greatness always has its downfall.
The Relevance of Cartoons to our Behavioral Pattern
Cartoons are made by people, and cartoon itself is a servant of its kind. Society tends to make things lighter with a brink of imagination and a slight comedic appeal. With the fast paced changing of the world, television become people's main source of entertainment and their friendly stress relievers. It may vary from drama, to horror, to comedy, and to cartoons. All of these are created not just for a single person, but a group of them.
Everything has a reason, and has an explanation. We could tell by Mark Hadley's article that cartoon violence is not that bad for a child, because it also enhances its creativity and survival thinking. The behavioral pattern of a person is not depending on the shows he may be watching, but the values he likes and learns from it. It may sound as complex as it may be, because from the start it was undefined.
The deep connections lie within its process. Human behavior can relate to cartoon humor due to the process that humans are the one's who made it. The concepts of cartoons are the daily lives of humans as well. That makes this a must read, or most awaited cartoon to watch for kids. The cartoonists make their art meaningful for the kids to learn, to enjoy, and to make life interesting and unforgettable. If a child has watched a cartoon with light story and full of moral lessons, he or she could become a cheerful and respectful person when he or she grows up. But when a child has been addicted to violent cartoon shows, that child could also emulate whatever he has seen on television. So cartoon shows are really very relevant to our behavioral pattern. It could make or unmake a child.
What are the bad effects of cartoon shows to children?
The research design used in this study is the descriptive research method wherein data from documents, articles and books found in in the internet were used to answer the research question posed. The research findings are the following:
1. The Human Behavior is generalized as the way people act on the things that are happening around the country. It may render from good or bad, depending on the person's perception of what is good to intake or not.
2. Cartoons are used today to convey political commentary, editorial opinion, and social comedy in newspapers and magazines.
4. Parents are unaware of the informations about the cartoons their kids are watching. They tend to look at it as a child's play habit of watching it while they're still young.
5. Cartoons became a basic foundation to puberty. Cartoons are easily accessed by people using mobile phones, television, Internet, and even newspapers.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions are drawn:
1. Cartoon Humor is a combined word of cartoon and Humor. It deliberately captures the innocent minds of children which lead them to watch it for long hours. Some have good and bad effects in their learning and behavior, hence bringing great impact in the society where they belong.
2. Cartoon violence enhances children to be more aware of their surroundings. Violence that is learned from a cartoon will also help them to modulate their survival instincts and creativity towards danger.
3. Children enjoy watching cartoons because they can easily relate it to their daily life experiences.
4. Children becomes Isolated while watching cartoons. Some may even prefer watching a cartoon than mingling with other children, It will only makes a kid as an Introvert.
RECOMMENDATIONS
After drawing the conclusions of the study, the researcher hereby make the following suggestions/recommendations:
1. People should not belittle cartoons as a kids show only, because it is a form of art that depicts societies social issues which develops future growth in perception of human's life.
2. People, specifically readers, teachers and students should be more aware and observant on what is happening to the society today as this study brings realization of the fact that media is feeding the children with cartoons that have obscure content that may change their behavioral asset that may lead to behavioral defects.
3. Scholars and future researchers should design a research that will develop the study throughout the process of the research to give a different take, perspective and approach in incorporating social psychology and philosophical humor of cartoons and how it will affect the kids who grew up watching these shows. Use this study as a basis for a more concrete study in the future regarding or related to the same topic as this study.

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
Watching cartoons is one of the stress relievers in people's lives. It makes a person's childhood more of a surprise by making him laugh and cry. Newspapers become more interesting because of the cartoons they feature. Whether it is Garfield, Popeye, or the classic, Archie, cartoons are able to ignite people's enthusiasm to continue living their lives to the fullest. The persons who have watched and read cartoons since they were kids testify that cartoons have really been a part of people's growth and development. Cartoons influence a lot of people. They tend to inherit some of cartoon character's traits, but sad to say, these are most often the bad ones.
Cartoons nowadays are very popular. It is so rampant that almost all the people in the world watch, from Tom & Jerry to Oggy, from Popeye to Sponge Bob, Kids know all of these, especially the adults who also grew up watching these shows.
Children love cartoons. Some even patronise it, making it as the centre of their lives. They even became as their childhood teddy bears which they kiss and hug, their best friends, and acted as a guide to adolescence.
A lot of kids nowadays are influenced by Cartoons, because they can be easily accessed through television, internet, and magazines. They even emulate how the characters speak, walk, and the way they deal with problems in the society. Even how they dress is being imitated by the kids. This reality just proves the great influence of cartoons to the growing up years of children, which they could carry up to their adulthood.
Parents let their children get hooked up in watching cartoons, because they think that it is safe for them to watch cartoon humor. They also believe that these shows give moral lessons to their children not knowing the dangerous effects that their kids might catch. Because of their busy schedules in their work, they don't notice anymore the bad effects of cartoons to their kids' behavior.
Cartoons may be considered one of the founders of our society because they are easily accessible to kids and adults alike. It may be online, or through print media like newspaper and magazine. They are so addictive that's why many people support and follow them daily. It could be a replacement already to soap operas because they are giving a whole box of categories. Cartoons also become their child's source of easy and early education. Since they imitate whatever they watch, they become very good in diction and the way they talk. Speech is not anymore a problem to kids who are very fond of watching these shows which make their parents believe that these are really commendable to their kids.
Even though Cartoons are very popular these days, the researcher observes that cartoons are actually bad for kids.
The information in this paper will help the readers determine why fairy tales are read to children. In addition, it will help the readers decide whether they should tell fairy tales to their own children or not.
A problem that the researcher foresees is that some parents might forbid their children from watching cartoon shows thinking that it might be bad for their education. But some cartoons are not made for entertainment or pleasure alone, some have deep meaning and depressing connection to human behavior. Providing the readers more information on the topic of cartoons would allow them to make decisions whether they should allow their children to watch cartoons and just help them guide their children's understanding of cartoons.
The purpose of this paper is to explain why cartoons could be bad for kids.
B. Statement of the Problem
This study aims to answer this question:
1. What are the bad effects of cartoon shows to children?
C. Significance of the Study
Parents. This research paper would be able to help parents understand the connection of cartoons their kids are watching to their kids’ behavior, both in the school and inside the house. This will help them to be more picky when it comes to the cartoons their kids are watching.
Kids. Kids who love to watch cartoons as much as I do will learn how to appreciate art in cartoons. Good or Bad, this will enlighten their young minds to the real world that they will encounter someday. Let this research be a guide for them to control the things they are watching, and the secrets they discover.
Non-cartoon Fans. Knowledge about this study could help people who have not been a fan of cartoon series since birth decide whether their decision not to watch cartoons is right or wrong. This study may not be significant to them, but they could still use this information someday in the real world.
Future Researchers. This study could be significant to future researchers as this would help them make similar observations and statements about the said topic. There is no crucial need for the topic to be further researched on to, but their future studies might discover or uncover any information that can be related to cartoon series.
C. Scope and Delimitation
The purpose of this research is to determine the hidden secrets of Cartoon series, and if they can affect the mental and social aspects of kids, and to decide whether the parents should keep their children watch cartoon shows.
Due to some constraints, this study will no longer focus on other effects of cartoons such as mono phobia. The researcher believes that violence, sadism, and feminism are some of the main effects of cartoons to children and teenagers. It will also give more emphasis and clarification on the said effects.
D. Materials and Methods
Information and data that are relevant to the study were gathered from a variety of articles/ sites in the internet, such as growingfaith.com.au, schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au, and vigilantcitizen.com.
The researcher suggests that for one to be familiarized further with the subject, he needs to read other cartoon concerned articles found online, and also read the psychological effects of cartoons to human beings in order to establish a connection between the said subjects. Watching cartoon shows could also help analyze data in order for one to experience and determine the effects.
E. Definition of Terms
Cartoons. A simple drawing showing the features of its subjects in a humorously exaggerated way, especially a satirical one in newspaper or magazine.
Sadism. The tendency to derive pleasure, especially sexual gratification, from inflicting pain, suffering, or humiliation to others.
Violence. Behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something.
Inherit. As an heir at the death of the previous holder.
